The Care Archive
2022
40 Cyanotype prints on paper of varying sizes
Dimensions Variable

The mapping of Sister Eucharia’s photographs, letters, and hands encapsulates the essence of an extraordinary life dedicated to service. Since the age of 18, Sister Eucharia has devoted herself to helping others, demonstrating immense compassion through various avenues. Her evocative photographs provide a creative and sensitive portrayal of the people and places she encountered during her mission. Each photograph is carefully annotated, offering invaluable context that enriches the narrative of her experiences.

This archive of care is symbolically represented through her hands, which serve as 'instruments of care' in the creation of a map. This map intertwines with the lives and experiences of those she has touched, reflecting the interconnectedness of her service. The hands depicted in the cyanotypes reach across the entire body of work, symbolizing her impact through others. The sunlight necessary for exposing the cyanotype prints represents both the unpredictability of a life in service and the guiding light that Sister Eucharia has been for many.

The map features two prominent prints on adjacent walls, marking significant milestones in her journey: the left print represents her departure from home to join the Franciscan Missionary and the initial growth of her family tree; the right print signifies the global expansion of her family tree and her profound contributions to service. This presentation aims to illuminate her life of faith, hardship, sacrifice, and service.

We invite you to reflect on the following questions:

What does it take to live a life of service?

Looking back on your own life, what would your archive of care look like?
