In Kenenza Michiko's multimedia installation, "peta napak tilas yang belum rampung" (An Unfinished Trail Map), she investigates the historical trauma experienced by the Chinese-Indonesian community in Jembatan Lima, West Jakarta, during the May 1998 riots. The work integrates NGO research archives, statistical data, auditory elements, and the current state of the landscape to construct a comprehensive narrative. The term napak tilas, meaning "tracing back," reflects the project's aim to revisit and document the events of 1998 through the personal experiences and familial stories of the artist. By mapping out the city's unresolved trauma, Kenenza addresses a historical wound that remains inadequately acknowledged.

For Kenenza and subsequent generations born after the 1998 riots, the memories of these events are inherited rather than directly experienced. This project serves as an educational tool, providing an alternative perspective and seeking to answer questions from the vantage point of those who live with the legacy of the past.
